About This Role
This role places you at the financial backbone of an international NGO with deep rural roots. As Accountant at IIRR, you won’t just manage ledgers—you’ll bridge financial compliance with field-level realities, ensuring funds reach remote communities. It suits an accountant who values mission-driven work over corporate monotony and is comfortable with frequent travel to project sites across Ethiopia.
What the Requirements Say About This Role
The call for 3-5 years of experience signals a need for someone who can independently handle complex grant accounting without constant supervision. IIRR is likely seeking a professional comfortable with donor reporting standards (e.g., USAID, EU) and quickbooks or similar systems, but more critically, someone who can adapt financial controls to unpredictable field conditions. The travel requirement hints at resilience—you’ll need to verify expenditures in person, not just from a desk.
How to Approach This Application
Emphasize any experience with multi-donor grants, particularly those involving government or European funders, as the partnership with PCPM suggests Polish/EU funding streams. Highlight instances where you reconciled field expenses under tight timelines or trained non-finance staff in basic compliance. A cover letter that connects your accounting skills to IIRR’s mission of rural empowerment will stand out—show you understand that numbers here translate into food security or education access.
Who This Role Suits
Best for mid-career accountants who want to break out of routine office work and engage with development impact firsthand. Competition will be moderate but sharp, given IIRR’s established reputation and the role’s travel component narrowing the applicant pool.
