About This Role
This role places you in a frontline humanitarian setting, managing environmental health risks in a displacement or crisis-affected area. You will be responsible for implementing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions, disease surveillance, and community health promotion within a specific woreda. It suits an experienced public health or environmental health professional who is comfortable working in remote, resource-limited field locations and can coordinate with both local authorities and international NGO protocols.
What the Requirements Say About This Role
The expectation of 3–5 years of experience signals that the IRC is seeking someone who has already navigated complex field logistics and can operate with minimal supervision. Rather than just listing academic qualifications, the profile suggests a practitioner who understands how to translate technical WASH standards into culturally appropriate, gender-sensitive community actions. The emphasis on “narrowing the gender gap” implies that you should have demonstrable experience integrating women’s safety and participation into environmental health programming.
How to Approach This Application
Your application should foreground specific examples of implementing WASH projects in hard-to-reach areas, particularly how you adapted to local constraints like water scarcity or cultural barriers. Highlight any experience working with refugees, internally displaced populations, or pastoralist communities. Since IRC prioritizes gender equality, include concrete actions you have taken to ensure women and girls are consulted and protected in health interventions.
Who This Role Suits
This role is best suited for a mid-career environmental health officer who thrives in rural, hands-on humanitarian work and is comfortable with frequent community engagement. It will be moderately competitive, as IRC is a well-regarded employer, but the remote location may narrow the applicant pool.
Background:
The International Rescue Committee, one of the world’s largest humanitarian international NGOs, provides relief, rehabilitation, and development support to vulnerable people and communities in over 30 countries. We began work in Ethiopia in 2000 in response to severe drought in Ethiopia’s Somali region and are currently providing assistance to Ethiopians and refugees in six regions in Ethiopia, implementing emergency and development programs in health, water and sanitation, economic recovery and development (ERD), women’s protection and empowerment, education, child protection, and multi-sectoral emergency response.
The IRC has a focus on narrowing the gender gap in humanitarian aid and ensuring that we contribute to gender equality, diversity, and inclusion in both our programs and operations by working to establish a context where our clients (including those from minority groups) enjoy the same rights and opportunities as well as equal access to services. The IRC also has a strong commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive culture, where safeguarding is upheld in our workplace and programs. We are determined to protect our clients and staff from safeguarding violations through prevention and, where misconduct is alleged, to address it without fear or favor.
