Main Purpose:
To ensure that the Lighthouse provides a safe, nurturing, and welcoming temporary home for children. The Housemother is responsible for overall supervision during day night-time, weekends, and Holidays ensuring the wellbeing and safety of all children in residence.
Duties & Responsibilities
1, Child Care and Supervision
- Provide a balanced approach of love, discipline, and care to all children.
- Treat all children equally, impartially, and fairly in all matters.
- Conduct regular night checks (every two hours) to ensure the safety and well-being of all children.
- Administer prescribed medication as directed by the Lighthouse nurse.
- Support children in maintaining personal hygiene and caring for their personal belongings.
- Ensure children complete daily household responsibilities (e.g., cleaning rooms and toilets).
Demonstrate patience, emotional stability, and flexibility in all interactions.
2, Behavior Management and Safeguarding
- Adhere strictly to the Hope for Justice Child Safeguarding Policy.
- Implement non-violent discipline and positive behavior management techniques.
- Report any serious illness or disciplinary concerns to the designated project staff.
In cases of sudden illness, promptly contact the nurse, clearly communicate the issue, and follow medical instructions.
3, Training and Collaboration
- Deliver weekly Child Wellbeing training sessions in collaboration with the Social Worker and Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO).
- Liaise effectively with Hope for Justice project staff regarding child welfare, health, and behavioral matters.
- Maintain open and professional communication with all team members to ensure coordinated care and support.
Educational Background
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Additional training or certification in childcare, social work, psychology, or a related field is highly desirable.
Professional Experience
- Proven experience in childcare, preferably in an organizational or institutional setting.
- Demonstrated ability to work with vulnerable children, including those with trauma backgrounds.
- Experience in implementing safeguarding policies and procedures in line with organizational standards.
- Familiarity with administering medication and supporting children’s health and hygiene needs.
- Prior involvement in delivering training or educational sessions related to child wellbeing is an asset.

Certification in First Aid is highly desirable.

Familiarity with trauma-informed care practices.
Behavior Management Techniques
Skills in non-violent discipline and conflict resolution.
Ability to implement behavior support plans.
Safeguarding and Protection Protocols
Knowledge of child safeguarding policies and procedures.
Ability to identify and report protection concerns.
Medication Administration
Competence in administering prescribed medication safely and accurately.
Basic Household Management
Ability to oversee cleanliness, hygiene, and daily routines within the facility.
Record Keeping and Reporting
Ability to maintain accurate logs of incidents, health checks, and daily activities.
Communication and Collaboration
Skills in liaising with nurses, social workers, and other staff effectively.
For all roles:
Understand and uphold the standards outlined in the Hope for Justice Safeguarding policies, acting with due care and attention to safeguard the wellbeing of anyone that comes into contact with our work and reporting concerns if they do arise. The employee will go through security and safeguarding training as part of their induction and will have refresher training annually. All employees will be referenced checked, and police checked prior to starting their position.

Eligibility Requirement
